What is pass4press?

In the late 90s, film was the medium for submitting complete pages to a printer. This workflow has now been completely replaced with electronic file submission. This has brought many benefits, in terms of cost, efficiency and quality, but has also introduced a change in the rules and responsibilities within the workflow.

Pass4press was introduced by the PPA to ease the way for the supply of digital advertising to magazine publishers and their suppliers. It is a set of best practice guidelines on how to create reliable print-ready PDF files. A PDF file which complies with pass4press specifications should require no additional handling instructions. Pass4press aims to increase predictability and reliability within the digital workflow.

The PDF-based format has become adopted across the workflow and is being used for editorial as well as advertising pages. The pass4press initiative has been expanded to provide mechanisms that assist in the creation and management of digital workflows for the end-to-end production of magazines in the UK.

The pass4press version 8 specifications can be accessed using the links to the left.

Who are the pass4press committee?

The Pass4press committee is a subgroup of PPA's Production & Technology committee and is chaired by Jonathan Moore, digital workflow project manager at The Condé Nast Publications. Click here for more information on PPA www.ppa.co.uk. The PPA Pass4press committee exists to develop the pass4press initiative and best practice for the digital transmission of material within the magazine production process. It also acts as a forum to allow publishing production personnel and supplier companies to collaborate to raise the standards, educate and resolve problems.

The Pass4press committee is there to provide tools to ensure that publishers and all others involved can deliver gradual and continual improvements to magazine digital production workflows. This helps to ensure that the magazine sector remains a major media player, able to compete favourably with other media channels for all those advertising pounds out there, and able to make a reasonable return whilst doing so.

Other initiatives

Pic4press
addresses the relationship between photographer and publisher.

Pic4press is an initiative launched by the Pass4press committee in November 2004 to allow editorial and production staff within UK magazine publishing companies to help with the transition from conventional photographic material to digital photography.

Increasingly materials are submitted digitally rather than in an analogue format, and pic4press describes the appropriate handling of this digital material in order to maintain its integrity.

Version 3 guidelines are now available and can be accessed by using the links to the left.

Proof4press specifying an appropriate proofing system is crucial to managing expectations in the supply chain. Clear concise guidelines coupled with the effective use of ICC profiles will help you to maintain consistency and accuracy. The only way to tackle proofing is to take a holistic approach. For the actual proofing device, there are three main points to address: choose proofing device: Choose colour space/profile; Agree tolerances.
